    [fic recs] Star Trek
I'm getting ready to watch Twin Peaks with a bunch of people, including [info]aphrodite_mine and [info]prozakpark, but first, links to more Star Trek fic. It's not my fault! People keep writing and reccing awesome stories. Other people (you know who you are) keep sending me IMs with links to fic! I've even started writing one of my own. *facepalm* I swear, Star Trek hasn't taken over my fandom life. Really. It hasn't.

(So I've had this up since last night and haven't posted. Fail. But watching Twin Peaks was AWESOME.)

    ...

    On to the fic!

    [info]londondrowning wrote "The Illustrated Man"
Summary: "McCoy is never going to stop laughing at the enormous ball of idiocy that is James T. Kirk."

I think Bones is my favorite male character simply because he is so. damn. snarky. This fic captures that very well and really made my night.

[info]the_dala wrote "The Usual Wear and Tear"
Summary: "We need to get you changed."

Bones is fantastic in this, and Kirk has this incredibly awesome slightly heart wrenching moment near the end, and I loved it.

    [info]the_summoning_d wrote "Positive Reinforcement"
Summary: In hindsight, he should have realised there and then that James Kirk was completely insane.

Bones is awesome here, nicely layered and still snarky while dealing with his fear. And it's possible that thanks to the movie and these fics, I totally find James T. Kirk hot as hell. God.

[info]_seven_crows wrote "Murphy's Law of Jim Kirk Diplomacy"
Summary: "Great," Kirk says. "In the end, it's not going to be punching someonein the face, or shooting something, or even in some barfight – it'sgoing to be a goddamned diplomatic mission gone wrong that does me in."

Gen fic. I really like Bones in it, and three men facing possible death together. Bones at the end is particularly how I like him.

    [info]londondrowning wrote "I'm Just a Jealous Guy"
Summary: "Leonard McCoy is thirty-one and he’s too fucking old to be anybody’s jealous boyfriend."

Bones = awesome. Also awesome is destiny versus choice and snark and this story.

    ---

I swear Star Trek isn't the only fandom in my life right now. I'm falling in love all over again with Sons of Anarchy thanks to a SoA/FatF fic I've been outlining for awhile now and I'm actually writing in Boy Meets World right now for no reason I know except that [info]thestalkycop wants it and what she wants I do. One is a BMW/Supernatural crossover and one we just started together today is a BMW/FatF crossover of awesomeness.

I'm one week into my summer job and it's - interesting. I love the work. The social part is rough. It'll work out, I hope.

    [fandom] Dollhouse
So Dollhouse. I finished watching the season the other day, and I still don't like it. I like pieces of it, but overall I find the premise incredibly sketchy. I realize that it's supposed to be sketchy (though I still think it was frequently presented as sexy and/or titillating rather than sketchy) and that people are analyzing it (or defending it) by saying that the show itself addresses the sketchiness of it, but I don't think that's true.

    Omega spoilers )

I will have to think on this more. Or maybe I will simply never enjoy it.

    ---

I am currently watching Alien Resurrection and both Ron Perlman and Signourney Weaver are insanely hot. Also there are more kickass women in this movie than I expected. Go movie! Probably they will all die, but maybe I will be surprised.

    ---

I am so very, very much looking forward to Terminator Salvation, but I probably need to watch Terminator 3, don't I? I thought I'd bought it on sale and just hadn't watched it, but no, it looks like I only have T2. I may have to remedy this.

    ---

I am exhausted and would like to go to bed, but I am packing and cleaning. I need to run to the store soon, because I didn't intend to be here this long and I am out of toilet paper and anything to make a full meal. Plus the more I cook the more dishes I have to wash before I leave. Also, I am waiting for my mom to call me back so I can wish her a happy mothers' day.

Mostly I just want to go to bed, but I have things to do. I'll go to bed early, though.

    [fandom] Supernatural, marathoning the season
Well I'm finally catching up on Supernatural. Nothing like needing to watch most of a season in twenty-four hours, huh?

    Metamorphosis )

    Monster Movie )

    Yellow Fever )

Halloween! Blood sacrifices! But I will save this for tomorrow.

Well okay then. My thoughts boil down to this: some excellent moments but overall I still have the same frustrations as ever. Sexist. Racist. So - everyone's telling me this is a better season because they added a white boy? Because I'm not actually seeing any other big change.

    ---

So I totally forgot to post this before I went to bed. I couldn't sleep, so now I'm back with my laptop and will post. This is why I dislike using Semagic, because I frequently forget to post when I use it. Ooops.

    [fandom] Star Trek
I went to see the new Star Trek last night with [info]raz0rgirl. Our showing wasn't sold out, which I enjoy because I dislike being shoved into a theater full of other people, but it was strangely not very fannish either. I missed getting to share geek joy with a theater full of other geeks. Apparently the show an hour or so before ours was full, according to the woman at the concession stand where I bought my soda and nachos.

I wasn't really looking forward to the Star Trek movie. For one thing, while I grew up with Star Trek, I am definitely a TNG woman. Picard's my favorite captain; Worf is my favorite character. I love TNG, and though I'd watch the original, I always felt a little disconnected from it. I loved it because it led to TNG, mostly, because it was history. Plus I'm not a big fan of movies which go back to the beginning - Star Wars epically failed, but Wolverine wasn't so hot either. (I have less fear for The Hobbit, probably because the book was my favorite growing up.)

So I expected to go in and watch Star Trek and have a fun time, but I expected it to mostly be fun because of my love for Star Trek in general and maybe the so-cheesy-and-stupid-it's-fun factor (I watch a lot of movies for this reason - Doomsday, Babylon A.D., Chronicles of Riddick, I'm looking at you).

I didn't expect it to be absolutely awesome in its own right. I didn't expect to love it.

And then there's the stuff I hate.

It's very much a love-hate thing for me, and I really, really didn't expect that. Like and hate, maybe.

I want to see it again.

    Spoilers )

I think I'm going to have to get dinner soon. I had a delicious big salad for lunch, but I'm hungry again. I don't know what I want. A cake, maybe. (I'm watching Ace of Cakes.)

[fic rec] Fast and the Furious, The Lost Boys, The Labyrinth
    Fast and the Furious

[info]ilyena_sylph has a number of lovely drabbles in this post, but this Letty coming home to Mia one in particular is lovely and hurtful and wonderful. (DW link.)

[info]crimson_keys wrote "Cried Out" for me, based, I think, on some of the prompts I requested for the [info]apocalyptothon exchange this year. (I posted my prompts in my journal to encourage people to join the ficathon - and, yes, to maybe get people thinking about the joy of such things and it worked!) It's Letty, Mia, and Dom at the end of the world and there are these sharp little insights from Letty which I love.

The Lost Boys and The Labyrinth

[info]merfilly wrote "World of Gray" based on a prompt from me, a crossover where I requested Star and Sarah, after their magic has ended, coming together. It's an amazing story, absolutely wonderful and haunting, and it leaves me wishing for more of their stories coming together. (DW link.)

They say like calls to like. They say all children must grow up.Sometimes, they say too much, and the heartbreak sets in when the magicfades away, leaving nothing but a world immersed in grays.

    ---

I am approximately 1500 words into another Fast and the Furious/Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover (yeah, I know) and I'm watching Leverage. It took me awhile to get into the first episode but then it clicked for me and I started to love it. I'm not actually sure which episode I'm on now; it's the second one I'm watching, but I'm catching them sporadically with my dvr (after a glitch that dumped a whole marathon of them a month or so ago - ouch, dvr, ouch!) and I don't think they're being aired in order anyway? But basically I'm too lazy to go figure out the order myself, since I'm writing and reading fanfic. Maybe later. I want to buy it on dvd when it comes out, though, so that's good.

    ---

I got free comics today. I love free comic book day, and I went to a store I'd never visited before to get them, and it's about two minutes down the street from me, and now I intend to go back frequently. I don't run a pull list because I don't want to store comics, I prefer graphic novels, but they had an excellent selection of games and graphic novels and it felt nice to be in a store full of things I love. I spend to omuch of my time around people who don't understand such things and who don't want to be geeks. I need to embrace awesome geekery.

    [meme] drabble request
    From [info]q_sama:

The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal.

Except I am changing it! As I tend to do.

No limit to people commenting. However, requests are limited to the fandoms in which I've already written stories. (See Fic:[fandom] in the tag list or my user info for the fandoms.) I prefer to write female characters and gen or girl slash, but I won't refuse to write boy slash if requested. Crossovers or apocalypse requests more than welcome. Drabble may be more of a ficlet.

    [fandom] women rock
I need some awesome in my life right now, so have a list of female characters I love. (Inspired by "On female character and fandom" and "Fuck You, She's Awesome.) Started as just a list, a couple of places I couldn't stop the love from overflowing, and then back to the list. And now I'm quitting even though I could keep going because I have other work to do. So tell me, who female characters you love?

    Fast and the Furious
    Letty
    Mia

    Tamora Pierce's Tortall universe
Keladry - OMG, Kel. I have so much love for Kel. SO MUCH LOVE. The thing is, I read Alanna at a very young age and fell in love with this world. Alanna is awesome. However, Alanna has magic and was touched by the gods and pretended to be a boy while training to be a knight. Kel? Kel has no magic, no being touched by the gods (well, more or less), and is the first girl in over 100 years to openly train to be a knight. She's stubborn and determined and scared but doing it anyway and, okay, basically I over-identify with Kel a huge amount because she is just a regular girl who is absolutely determined to do this thing no matter how many people try to stop her. She has weakness and fears and she works so hard to overcome them. She fails and she keeps trying.
Alanna - As you just saw, I read Alanna's story at a very young age. Alanna and Tammy Pierce are huge parts of how I became a feminist. (Also, my mom, who is awesome.)
Thayet - She was a princess of a country where women couldn't inherit, where when Alanna's secret came out would have killed her in vicious ways, and the daughter of a cruel leader. She lives with the weight of the sacrifices her mother made to show the evil in the way her people were being treated. She fled her country with one female warrior to keep her safe and then the two of them risked their lives to protect children they picked up on the way in the middle of a war. She goes to Tortall wanting to be a commoner and start a school and when she ends up marrying the King, she not only DOES start her school anyway, she creates a military force which allows women to fight and then she trains them and rides with them when she can. I think she is a HUGE influence on Tortall becoming a better place for women.
Buri - The female warrior mentioned in Thayet's piece she is young when we first meet her and stubborn and scared and yet she still does everything she can to keep Thayet safe.

Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic universe

    Galadriel

    V for Vendetta
    Evey Hammond

    The Dresden Files
    Karrin Murphy
    Charity Carpenter
    Molly Carpenter
Lara Raith - Lara scares the shit out of me. She's cruel and luscious and tricky and dangerous and sexual and inhuman and absolutely amazing. She gives me chills.

    Firefly/Serenity
    Zoe Alleyne Washburn
Kaylee Frye - She is an amazing mechanic who is sweet and cute and friendly and sexual and not afraid to be all those things openly.

    The Lost Boys
    Star
    Lucy Emerson

    The Baby-Sitters Club
    Dawn Schafer
    Abby
    Stacey McGill

    Supernatural
Missouri - Oh, Missouri, with your knowledge and competency and verbally smacking down Dean and being an awesome woman who isn't in her 20s and isn't white and isn't thin.
    Mary Winchester
    Ruby

"her living cell of meat and bone."

That's such a gorgeous line. There are parts of season four and five I really dislike, but on the whole, they make me happier than seasons six and seven. Season five in particular has some lovely moments.

My lower back hurts. Stupid ice and snow. Stupid weather. Stupid cold state.

I need to go somewhere warm over break. It likely won't happen, but I do have that need. (On the plus side, I have a job this summer. Good times.)

I have plans to go drink pink slushy things tonight, but I don't want to go back out in the cold. I would much rather stay here with all my new books -- oh, wait, no, because they're all school related. Boo. However, I have Shrek III and Gracie from Netflix, so that might be fun.

I want werewolves. Suggestions? I want werewolf books and movies and warm fuzzy monsters. Or, well -- no, actually, yes. Warm fuzzy monsters.

I am also craving new graphic novels. I'm thinking it might be time to catch up on Ultimate X-Men.

    [writing] x-men movieverse
So I've been sitting here, trying to catch up on my flist (impossible task) and decide what to write for the xmmficathon due next month. (I would be working on the femgenficathon also due next month [did I say how grateful I was that the deadline was extended? Very grateful] but all the source books are still packed. Next weekend, or the long weekend after it, I intend to finish it before class starts. I also intend to finish the xmmficathon.) I know which prompt I'm writing, and I'm excited about it. However, all I want to do is write hot Colossus high school everything-but-sex situations. Guys, girls, I don't care whom he is paired with, I just want it. Oh, Colossus. (Everything-but-sex covers a lot of things -- blow jobs in the closet, frottage, heavy petting at the movies, etc.) Unfortunately, that doesn't actually fit what I need to be writing, and also I don't think I could do it justice.

Maybe I'll write some more Star/Maria from The Lost Boys instead. [info]thestalkycop asked for some, and what the girl wants, she gets, it sometimes just takes awhile. (She's been asking me to write what I'm writing for femgen for quite awhile now.)

Stupid blank Word document. I think I'll copy and paste the prompt in just to have something.

    [vid rec] Supernatural "Women's Work"
So sisabet and sockkpuppett made a Supernatural vid to Hole's "Violet".

This is the comment I left on each of their journals:

I've been thinking about this vid ever since I watched it, trying to find the right words to comment, but I don't have them. I can say thank you for making this, thank you, a hundred times thank you, but that's not right, either. I want to have thoughtful things to say, and instead I am just rocked to the core because all my complaints, all these things I've said (and sometimes felt like I've said them to a void, even though I know there are other people who feel the same way) are suddenly right there in the vid, compacted, everything all at once like a gorgeous combination punch.

So thank you for making this vid. It puts together all the things some fans want to ignore, puts it all into a visual, visceral blow.

I'm going to link this to everyone I know and then watch it again to see if I can move beyond being absolutely thankful someone made this vid.

And also, I've just realized I am grateful for this vid because I am so tired of talking into a (often perceived) void. (I say often perceived because I do discuss this with people who agree to me, but the more vocal people are the ones who, basically, tell me to shut up and stop worrying so much, it's just a television show and not worth my energy. Those are the comments which stick with me and make me frustrated and exhausted.) I think the visual impact is, in this case, a much better example than any number of essays.

    Thank you.

The links to download can be found here.

I suggest you go watch this vid, whether you are a fan of Supernatural or not. This is a fandom-specific exemplification of a greater trend of sexualized violence toward women. It's everywhere; this could be almost any fandom source, almost any news source. It's sickening, and it's powerful. You should watch it.

After talking to my sister, K, I really want to write about the way authors interact with their readers online; the way fans who become authors a) deal with fans and b) still act like fans first and authors second; the way author-fan expectation can change fan expectation; and how that can effect the way a new form of the source material is received.

(This is inspired by The Dresden Files, the show, and the way it hasn't been renewed, compared to Stardust.)

Unfortunately, I'm just taking a packing break to eat a bagel and then I'm back to it, so this will have to wait. I just wanted to put it here so I can remember to talk about, I hope.

(I've just switched my background show to a Scooby Doo movie, but I was watching a Cheetah Girls movie because they were singing and dancing their way through Barcelona and I was enjoying seeing all the places I visited once and would like to visit again. I can't tell you how many Disney tv movies I've watched just to see parts of Hawaii. Yeah.)

Did you know Tail Spin is on at 11:30 a.m. during the week? I took this morning off to pack (because I am seriously not nearly far enough along for someone who leaves Friday. I shouldn't have agreed to work extra days) and had the tv on in the background for noise. However, TAIL SPIN! (Is it one word or two? I can't really tell from the tv.) I love this show, and used to watch it all the time as a kid. Yay for Toon!Disney bringing me pieces of my childhood.

Of course, I've already decided not to get cable when I move. I'm kind of regretting that right now. Oh well, I won't have time to watch tv.
